The Jackson Family of Shelby County, Alabama

William James Jackson (1847-1924)

Hulda Rebecca Hay Jackson (1845-1932)

William James and Hulda Rebecca Hay

Family lore has it that Hulda Rebecca was not her full name .  You see, one day when Hulda's mother was pregnant with her, a traveling salesman came along.  The salesman said that if her mother, Mary Armour Hay, would allow him to name the baby, he would give Mary the finest dress in his line.  Mary agreed, and the baby was named Hulda Rebecca Sarah Ann Dallas Polk Texas Oregon New Mexico Hay.

and

Mary Matilda (Mollie) Jackson (1869-1913) m. William Alonzo Wilder (1867-1908)

married in a double wedding on December 14, 1902

Excerpt from the Will of Rufus A. Lester dated January 14, 1902:

"The disposition of my property and estate, as set out above, is made on the following conditions, that is to say, that it is my will & desire that my children shall never associate, or mingle in any way with W. A. Wilder, the husband of my wife's sister, Mary M., or with his children or any of them, & that they, my said children, be not permitted to attend the same school with the said children of said W. A. Wilder. And I do most earnestly & sincerely request of my dear wife & of my Executor, as well as the rest of my family, that this part of my will be not disregarded or lightly treated. I make this provision after having thoroughly weighed the matter, & from feeling that it is my duty towards my children & probably all concerned that I do so. It is my wish that my wife & children be thoroughly informed as to this provision & condition in my will as soon after my death as may be thought proper to be done by my Executor. Then after that if the children voluntarily go counter to my wishes & will, or are permitted & encouraged to do so by my said wife, & visit & mingle with said family, it is my will, & I so decree, that their interests, both of mother & children, in said property shall immediately cease, & the title to the same shall be divested out of them, & shall immediately be vested in my sisters then living, to be shared by them equally it being my intention herein to give & bequeath my said property to my said wife & children conditionally, & the condition being that set out in this paragraph." - A great family mystery!
