Early History of My Barnes Family Line in Alabama

Much of the information we have about how this Barnes family came to Alabama and settled in and around Dallas, Chilton, Bibb, and surrounding counties comes from a journal that was kept by Michael Harrison Barnes, one of the sons of Benjamin Barnes, Sr.  We are fortunate that he wrote what seems to be a eulogy for his father that includes much of that information.  He titled that eulogy "An Old Landmark Past Away."

The original manuscript is owned by Mr. Robert Bamburg of Uniontown, Alabama.  Although this states they came to Alabama in a buggy, Robert's mother, Ms. Olivia Barnes Bamburg wrote, " I have heard Oscar's father [Michael Harrison Barnes] say it was an old fashion two-wheel horse cart."

The following is a transcription of the chronicle of the life of Benjamin Barnes, Sr.

Michael Harrison Barnes (1843-1922) and
Sarah Catherine Friday Barnes (1848-1929)
